The Arts are an integral part of our holistic approach to education at Mary Help of Christians Catholic College. Through Drama, Media Arts, Music and Visual Arts, students develop practical skills, explore different perspectives and discover new ways to express themselves.

We encourage students to participate with curiosity and confidence, whether exploring an art form for the first time or developing an existing talent.

Exploring the Arts

Across Years 7 and 8, students experience four Arts subjects through semester rotations. This provides a foundation for discovering interests and making informed elective choices from Year 9 onwards.

  • Drama: Creating characters, exploring stories and developing performance skills through voice, movement and collaboration.

  • Media Arts: Examining how media communicates meaning and creating works using images, sound and storytelling.

  • Music: Developing musical understanding and skills through listening, performing and composing.

  • Visual Arts: Exploring materials, techniques and ideas to create artworks that communicate meaning.

Creativity through learning and practice

Creative achievement grows through knowledge, experimentation, practice and feedback. Students learn to develop ideas, refine techniques and reflect on their work.

Our Learning and Thinking Model — Attend → Build → Practise → Improve → Reflect — supports this process. Students build their understanding, practise their skills and use feedback to improve what they create.

Along the way, they develop perseverance, collaboration and the confidence to share their work with others.

Instrumental Music

Visiting instrumental music teachers attend the College weekly, providing opportunities for students to undertake lessons during school time.

Instrumental tuition supports students to develop their musical skills through individual guidance and regular practice. Families interested in lessons are encouraged to contact the College for information about available instruments, lesson arrangements and fees.

Opportunities beyond the classroom

Co-curricular Arts opportunities give students further ways to explore their interests, develop their talents and connect with others.

As the College grows, we will continue to develop opportunities for students to perform, display their work and contribute to College celebrations and community life. Details of available current activities and participation arrangements are shared with students and families weekly through our Weekly What's On and Student Morning Notices. There is already a lot happoening!

Creativity and community

The Arts enrich our Catholic community through creativity, reflection and shared experiences. They invite students to explore questions of identity, faith and belonging, and to appreciate the stories and perspectives of others.

Whether creating, performing or supporting their peers as an audience, students are encouraged to demonstrate respect, generosity and pride in one another’s efforts.
