Devices for Learning

At Mary Help of Christians Catholic College, technology supports purposeful learning. Every student is issued with a school-managed Chromebook to access learning resources, complete tasks, collaborate and continue their learning at home.

Our approach is guided by a clear principle: the learning purpose determines when and how we use technology. Access to devices and screen use are closely managed by teachers, with Chromebooks used for specific tasks where they support learning. Screen use does not make up the majority of students’ learning experiences. Explicit teaching, classroom discussion, handwriting, reading, practical activities and face-to-face collaboration remain central to learning at the College.

Purposeful and responsible use

In keeping with our Learning and Thinking Model — Attend, Build, Practise, Improve and Reflect — students use digital tools to supplement the development of knowledge and understanding, practise skills, respond to feedback and reflect on their progress.

Teachers set clear expectations about when devices are opened, used and put away. Students are expected to follow these directions, keep their attention on learning and use their Chromebooks responsibly. This includes treating others respectfully online, protecting personal information and submitting work that honestly reflects their own learning.

Ready to learn each day

Students take their Chromebooks home to support homework, assignments and revision. They are responsible for caring for their device and bringing it to school ready for use each day.

Students are expected to:

  • Charge their Chromebook fully at home each night.
  • Bring it to school every day.
  • Handle, carry and store it carefully.
  • Report any damage or technical problems promptly.

Charging stations are available at school when needed, although nightly charging at home remains part of being prepared to learn.

Supporting learning at home

Families can support responsible device use by establishing clear routines for homework, encouraging use in a shared space and helping students balance digital learning with sleep, physical activity and time away from screens. Having a Chromebook available at home does not mean that every learning task requires a device.

Provision and repairs

Access to a school-managed Chromebook is included in College fees. Families are responsible for the cost of repairs or breakages beyond fair wear and tear.
