At Mary Help of Christians Catholic College, careers education helps students understand themselves, explore opportunities and make informed decisions about their future.

We recognise that young people’s interests and aspirations develop over time. Our approach gives students opportunities to discover their strengths, broaden their horizons and build the confidence to take their next steps.

Grounded in our Catholic identity, this journey also invites students to consider how they can use their gifts in meaningful ways, contribute to their communities and serve others.

A journey through secondary school

Our signature subjects support students to develop as learners, explore their interests and prepare for their next steps:

  • Year 7 – Thinking for Learning: Students build the habits, strategies and confidence to become effective learners.

  • Year 8 – Thinking in Action: Students apply their thinking through practical challenges that develop collaboration, problem-solving and independence.

  • Year 9 – Future Ready: Students explore their strengths and interests, broaden their horizons and develop skills for future learning, life and work.

  • Year 10 – Future Forward: Students investigate pathways, gain practical experience and make informed decisions through Know → Experience → Decide → Act.

Connecting learning with life beyond school

As our program develops, we intend to build connections with employers, training providers, universities and community organisations, with particular attention to opportunities across Townsville and North Queensland.

Planned opportunities include career conversations, guest speakers, workplace visits, practical workshops and work experience. These experiences will help students understand different occupations, ask informed questions and connect classroom learning with future possibilities.

Specific opportunities will be communicated to students and families as arrangements are confirmed.

Students are active participants in shaping their future, supported by their families and the College.

Through subject selection information, pathways conversations and opportunities to review their plans, we will help students make considered choices while keeping future options open.

Our aim is for every student to leave Mary’s with a strong sense of their strengths, a purposeful next step and the confidence to continue learning throughout life.
