At Mary Help of Christians Catholic College, we value the histories, cultures and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We want our First Nations students to experience a strong sense of belonging, take pride in their identities and pursue their aspirations with confidence.

Supporting First Nations students to thrive

Our dedicated First Nations Education Teacher, Mrs Aimee Young, works with First Nations students, families, and our staff to support learning, wellbeing and engagement.

Through pastoral support, mentoring and community connections, we encourage students to recognise their strengths, set meaningful goals and grow as learners and leaders. High expectations, paired with purposeful support, help students work towards their goals while valuing who they are and the knowledge and experiences they bring.

Learning across the College

First Nations education enriches learning for all students.

Our First Nations Education Teacher works alongside teaching staff to incorporate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures through the Australian Curriculum and develop teaching approaches that respect students’ cultural identities and experiences.

We seek to build understanding of the diversity of First Nations peoples, their continuing connections to Country and community, and their contributions to contemporary Australia. This learning encourages curiosity, respectful dialogue and a deeper appreciation of our shared responsibility for reconciliation.

Relationships with families and community

Strong relationships help students feel connected and supported. We value the perspectives of families and recognise the important role of Elders and community members in sustaining cultural knowledge, identity and belonging.

Through listening and working together, we aim to strengthen the connections between students’ learning, their families and their communities.

Emerging Leaders

The College participates in Townsville Catholic Education’s Emerging Leaders Program, which supports First Nations students to set and work towards personal goals in attendance, academic improvement, and engagement and application.

With support from a mentor and their family, students develop a Personal Leadership Agreement that encourages responsibility, recognises progress and supports participation in cultural, community and other learning experiences.
