The Mary’s Way: Learning, Service and Compassion

At Mary Help of Christians Catholic College, we want every student to be known, valued and supported to grow. Our Catholic identity shapes a community where each person’s dignity matters, relationships are built on respect, and students are encouraged to contribute to the wellbeing of others.

Our culture is expressed through The Mary Help of Christians Way, founded on the three pillars of Learning, Service and Compassion. These pillars guide how we learn, how we treat one another and how we respond when challenges arise.

Learning: developing bold minds

We encourage students to approach learning with curiosity, effort and a willingness to improve. This means being prepared, participating actively, asking questions and using feedback to take the next step.

Calm, focused classrooms help everyone learn. Through clear expectations and consistent routines, we support students to develop the habits that make learning possible: paying attention, listening respectfully, working purposefully and allowing others to do the same.

Service: contributing with generous spirits

Service begins with noticing the needs of others and choosing to help. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their contribution to College life, care for shared spaces and offer their time and talents for the benefit of others.

From small acts of everyday helpfulness to opportunities for leadership and community involvement, service helps students recognise that their actions can make a positive difference.

Compassion: responding with compassionate hearts

Inspired by Jesus through the model of Mary, we encourage students to treat others with kindness, empathy and respect.

Compassion means welcoming others, recognising when someone needs support and considering how our words and actions affect those around us. It also means learning to acknowledge mistakes, repair harm and make better choices.

Clear expectations, purposeful support

Our Student Engagement Framework brings The Mary’s Way to life as part daily of our College routines. It makes expectations clear and describes the support that helps students meet them.  The Student Engagement Framework also shapes our way of being at all times when at the college or representing the college in public, and is underpinned by two core principles:

  • It is framed positively, highlighting what we do want from and expect of our students, rather than what we do not want; and 
  • It employs a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), ensuring that we provide each student with the support they need to help them to follow The Mary Help of Christians Catholic College Way.

We explicitly teach and reinforce positive behaviour, recognise students’ contributions and respond to concerns with care and accountability. When students find expectations difficult to meet, we work to understand barriers and provide appropriate redirection and/or support.

Our approach combines consistent expectations for all students with additional assistance for those who need it. The aim is to strengthen students’ engagement, independence and capacity to participate positively in learning and College life.

Working together with families

A strong College culture grows through partnership between students, staff and families. Open communication, shared expectations and early conversations help us respond constructively to challenges and recognise progress.

Together, we help young people develop the confidence to learn, the generosity to serve and the compassion to care for others.
